Q. Welcome Jessica! Tell us a bit about yourself!

Hi! My name is Jessica Tanner and I am 32 years old and live in Jefferson, Georgia. Our 9th wedding anniversary is coming up for my wonderful husband, Matt, and I. We have two children, Olivia (5yrs) and Brooks (2yrs). They definitely keep us busy! Olivia will be starting Kindergarten this August and Brooks, well, let’s just say that he is a typical 2 year old little boy! I don’t really have any hobbies at the moment. My family and business take up most of my time. We live in a Golf Community so when it is nice outside we take the kids for rides in the golf cart and sometimes we have family “golf time” with the hubby, but mostly he plays on his own…I am not too much of a fan! I am trying really hard to raise a honest Christian family. We attend Hebron Baptist Church in a nearby community and my children currently go to a small private christian daycare/pre-k center. I feel really strongly about having family values and teaching my kids wrong from right. I am very involved in their little lives and a vow to myself is to continue that communication through their teachers, parents of their friends, etc.

Q. Tell us about your photography journey, when and how did you become interested, and how did that grow into starting a business?

I started out in photography a lot like most in the same field of expertise that I have met. I was working a corporate marketing job at DISH Network when my husband bought me a beginner Nikon D60 DSLR for christmas. Actually, he got it with his rewards points at work. He knew that I needed a camera that would actually take decent pictures of our very mobile new little girl. The first time I held that camera, I had not a clue what to do with it. I actually told my husband that we should probably send it back! When I finally learned how to zoom with the lens and get decent photos of our daughter to share on MySpace (LOL), I became addicted….I think I took 200 shots of her eating in her high chair every evening! Really?? After a few months, I started researching photography and different types of photography when a co-worker of mine shared her passion for the business. From there, my business was born shortly after, but just as a part time gig. I became obsessed with newborns and knew that one day, this is what I wanted to do with my life. It was actually a five year goal for me. When Olivia reached kindergarten, I would then think about doing photography full time. Well, needless to say, it didn’t happen that way. As I took on clients, the referrals poured in. My part time business started looking full time as each month flew by. I would stay up into the wee hours of the morning editing, packaging, invoicing etc. It just became way too much. I didn’t want all of this for my life. I was so excited about the photography business, but I was so tired at the same time. After much debating and financial evaluation from hubby and I, I took the plunge in September of 2010 to go full time with the business. I really just couldn’t handle it all and a decision had to be made… lay the camera down or go full force.

Q. Tell us about your gear, Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens? Anything on your wish list?

Nikon. I have a D3 and a D700. In all honesty, I really can’t tell that much difference in the two for what I focus on. I use both cameras all the time. For a newborn session, I put the 105mm Macro on the D700 and the 50mm 1.4G on the D3 so that I can use both cameras without having to change out lenses. It works out quite nice! I also have the 24-70 2.8G for some wide angle studio shots, but that lens is my go-to for outdoor portraits. The macro also doubles as a portrait lens and it is super creamy for outdoor portraits as well. Every now and again I will use the 50 outdoors. My next lens will be the 35 1.4G. It is nice to have for the newborn floor shots. I am on the short side, so I typically have to climb up on a mini ladder to get those.

Q. I know you specialize in newborns and have a home studio. Do you use natural light or studio light? Which do you prefer and why?

I was a natural light photographer in my old home studio. When we moved, the space that was dedicated for the new studio didn’t quite have enough light for the layout that I needed. I then switched over to studio lights and shoot 100% with it now, of course, unless I am outdoors. As far as lights go, I have an Alien Bee 400 paired with a Westcott 50×50 soft box and a generic trigger/receiver. I don’t feel that you need to go fancy with triggers. They all do the same thing when you are in such a small space. My studio space is 450 sqft and it is just enough room for me and my clients without being cramped.

Q. You are a master at marketing – how did you learn? Can you share any good marketing tips?

Ahhh…marketing. Well, I am glad you asked that question. Marketing can be a very touchy subject. You will find 100 different ways to market yourself in this economy, especially with this type of business. First and foremost I have to say that I don’t feel that anyone is my competition. There are so many fish in the sea to reel in. A photographer needs to be confident with their work, their brand, and how they conduct business. The rest will follow. As far as specific marketing techniques that I have learned, well , I was a Marketing Specialist for DISH Network. I taught their retailers on how to capitalize on advertising, which advertising methods worked for them, which ones to stick with and which ones to toss based on their findings when recording where their customers came from. Of course running a store front with product can be much different than running a studio…or can’t it? I currently have several marketing strategies that have worked quite well. Your website needs to be top notch and very easy to navigate. A prospective client needs to be able to contact you from every page instead of searching for that contact menu option. I hired a free lance SEO “person” as you would say and she takes care of all my optimizing so that I am at the top of the list in Google searches for my area. So far, I haven’t had to use any Google Ads yet but it is something that I have been considering just to put that extra punch out there. I also advertise in 5 different pediatric specialty doctors offices including a few OBGYN offices. I like to decorate the waiting and patient rooms with large canvases all displaying collages of my most recent work. I feel that variety is key. The more variety that you can show a potential client, the better. I also have larger 6×9 information cards throughout the offices as well. I have one for each room that I have a canvas in, they are ready and available as soon as the client shows interest. I also donate to silent auctions and partner in community events. My biggest marketing strategy is Word of Mouth. If the client is happy they will refer you to every one. A referral bonus program is also key. I offer something for both parties involved. Branding is very important. Find a style that best suites you and stick with it. When you start to market yourself in your area and surrounding communities you want prospective clients to recognize your logo and colors (aka your brand). Try to keep it all very simple and don’t make drastic changes too often. Lastly, track your efforts. If you don’t know where you clients are coming from, how can you tell if your marketing efforts are working? For example, I created an Excel spreadsheet that tracks every prospect who contacted me. There is field where I record how they heard about me. Ever since I hired my “SEO person” I have seen a huge jump in “Google” prospects! I know that it is working! And it is such a good feeling!!!

Q. What is the one thing you struggle with the most in terms of the technical side or the business side of your business?

Technical Struggles: REALLY knowing my camera. Because my photography business is based solely on infants and children, I rarely find myself exploring other ways to photograph subjects. I use the same settings all the time…studio or outdoor natural light. I would love to explore more OCF and creating dramatic lighting outdoors. I never really challenge myself with all the different settings to see what they are all about. I am sure that is a really bad bad thing! or a really bad bad excuse for not learning more techy stuff!

Q. Want to share any advice you received early on in your career that helped you immensely?

It is OK to learn, learn, learn. Don’t ever think you are good enough to not take a workshop, ecourse or the like. I thought I knew my lights.. and I just recently took a beginners lighting course that was geared towards newborn and infants. WOW… I learned a TON and over the last few months I have taken my lights to the next level! There is ALWAYS something that you can learn from anyone. Also, build several strong relationships with other photographers. I would die if I couldn’t call up two of my really close photographer friends and bounce ideas back and forth (we almost talk daily!!). They keep me inspired and also keep me grounded. Joining a local photography group on Facebook or online is also very helpful. I gain access to assistants, knowledge and a boat load of other inspiration from other photographers that are in my back yard!

Q. Any parting words of wisdom for other photographers just starting out?

Fight for what you want and believe in. Always be inspired. Learn something new every week. And last but definitely not least…Price yourself according to what you are worth!

Thank you so much, Jessica, for sharing with us!!!

Q. Welcome Brooke! Tell us a bit about yourself!

I am the very blessed wife of the most incredible man in the world, and together we created something beautifully amazing- A Family. We have been blessed with two beautiful children, Maren (4), and Zane (almost 2). Maren was my very inspiration for beginning my journey in child photography. My family is my biggest inspiration for everything I do in this life, and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have them, always surrounding me with their love and support.

Q. Tell us about your photography journey, when and how did you become interested, and how did that grow into starting a business?

I have practiced many years in the arts. Over 10 years ago, I went to an art high school which to this day, is still a very prestigious high school for the arts (Dreyfoos School of the Arts, in West Palm Beach Florida). I was very intrigued by photography and the darkroom, and for 6 years (the school went from 7th-12th grade) studied film photography, & the art of developing in the darkroom. I shot my very first image with a pin hole camera made from a cardboard box the size of my hand, and then developed the ever so over exposed and out of focused image, in the dark room. In my junior and senior years there, I began to focus strictly on photography, rather than other mediums of art as well, and spent most my days in the darkroom (during lunch, after school, skipping class LOL)….I was literally addicted with shooting and developing and creating art using photographic expression. Going to the school for the arts gave me such an appreciation for the arts, at such a young age. As little artists, we were forced to be creative, to think outside of the box, to create our own ideas and concepts and god forbid….dared to be different. We were taught that art was about expressing our inner selves, whatever the medium may be. Back then, there was no such thing as facebook or pinterest, or any other online sharing facilities where others could emulate your ideas and art. Our inspirations came strictly from studying art history and all the movements of its time. Studying art movements such as expressionism, modernism, and even prehistoric and ancient art, has always been such inspiration to me. The year I left high-school was the year the school received all of their digital photography equipment and mac computers. I put down my camera for a few years while I went to a University, and a few years after that i had my first child, Maren, and was inspired to shoot again. Only other than knowing how to shoot manually, I had to self teach myself the world of digital photography, and that I did, and I have been working and growing at it every since. I started my business in 2009.

Q. Tell us about your gear, Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens? Anything on your wish list?

Well….It’s funny that you ask, because I am currently in a transition mode. I have shot with Nikon for forever. I am currently shooting with a Nikon D700. I love it. However, when I borrowed my mentors D800, I must admit I was a bit disappointed with the color. I also shoot side by side with some of my best friends who are also pro child photographers, and shoot with the Mark 3, and have been fortunate enough to get to compare image quality out in the field. As much as I LOVE my D700, it’s that time to upgrade for image quality purposes, and Im telling you, the Mark 3 is absolutely incredible. After much comparison in the field, and much research online, I have finally convinced myself to make the switch. If you go to my facebook page, I am selling all of my Nikon equipment. ;( My favorite lens is my fifty 1.4, which will be replaced with the canon 1.2, ultimately because it really is the most convenient lens, while still achieving quality sharpness and bokeh. I do love my 85 for my portrait sessions! You definitely caught me in a transitional time in my photography gear life! On my wish list? Well, the 70-200 has been on my wish list, and now that I’m making the switch, I have the good ole’ excuse to revamp my lens collection and I will be making this purchase next for sure!

Q. You are known for your high end children portraiture, how did that become your focus? Do you still photograph other subjects, such as newborns or families?

I am and always have been drawn to children. Even in high school most of my portfolio was children and babies. Having children of my own is what really spiked my interest in photography again, and inspired me to shoot children again. Over the years, I have really been able to narrow down what I am truly passionate about shooting, and that’s children and toddlers/babies. I am officially closing my books for newborns, maternity, and families. (Families have been closed for awhile now). For me personally, I cannot shoot what I don’t love, no matter how much I am getting paid. I am just so passionate about shooting children, and my heart is so involved with them, that I have recently decided to start saying no to all of the above mentioned. It’s not easy saying no, trust me. I just had to say no to a couple different clients, and I feel bad doing it. I will be shooting my last newborn in a couple weeks, that Im actually flying out for! I do love me some snugly newborns, I just don’t love the work and time they come with, and like I said, my true passion lies with shooting children and toddlers.

Q. Styling plays a huge role in your child portraiture sessions, how do you find inspiration and push yourself creatively in styling your sessions?

I try to be unique and think outside the box. I try to find inspiration in places that most wouldn’t and I absolutely avoid looking at other photographers pages for inspiration, especially locals. A lot of my inspiration comes from my everyday life, I just keep my mind open, and my eyes open. From the music in my car rides, to the displays in the windows at the malls. Inspirations is everywhere in this world.

Q. You mention having a personal photography mentor, which I think a lot of new photographers have trouble finding. How did your mentor relationship come about and develop? What’s the biggest benefit you’ve received in having a mentor?

I have only told this story a million times, but I have never written it, so here it goes.

Sometimes there are people in this world you are just meant to meet, and remain forever friends with. Steve Gustafson was absolutely one of them. My daughter was just a baby, and we were out to eat at this restaurant on the water near our home. I had just got my D80, and my brand new lens, and of course I made my hubby and Maren walk out onto the dock to take a picture, and as I was taking their pics, up walks this weird old guy and says ” My friend over here is a photographer and can take a family picture for ya if you’d like.” Im thinking well first of all, isn’t everyone a photographer these days??? And secondly, there is no way I am handing over my brand new camera with my brand new $1800 24-70 lens to some stranger!! Then, the strange guy standing off to the side walks up to us, kind of laughing it off, with his gentle demeanor, and says, “sorry about him, haha. Im Steve. Nice to meet ya. You shooting a Nikon?” I was still a tad hesitant to start this photography convo with some man I didn’t know, as we usually keep to ourselves. He then proceeded to tell me he is a photography teacher up at Chattanooga State College. My eyes popped. He had finally gotten my attention, and my camera went right into his hands. Next thing you knew, he was snapping away at my husband, daughter and myself. ONE hour later, we said out goodbyes after what seemed like a conversation with an old friend.

We kept in touch every day. I was just learning the digital world, and refreshing the technical side of things for myself, so I had so many questions. I was like his annoying side kick that wished he was one of his students but lived too far to be one. Even his students got to know me. He talked about me in his classes. I called him all the time. He talked to me before his classes. He talked to me after his classes. He talked to me before my shoots, during, after. He was on call for me 24-7. All I wanted to do was learn and improve and just shoot shoot shoot! He wasn’t easy on me either, which I appreciate. It was what helped me grow! There was a critique with every image, still is. No matter how good I got, there was always something I could improve on. I guess that is how you get fantastic right, and then continue to be fantastic!!?? To this day, he still finds ways to push me and critique me with. I thrive on it, and I love it, because as artists, we are constantly improving and changing and growing. I would have to say I was and still am pretty lucky to have him in my life!

A couple years of this friendship went by, and he came into town for a work trip again (his full time job, not photography) and my husband and I invited him to stay with me with our family for the weekend after his work week was up. My husband had gotten to know Steve really well over our phone convos, & him and my husband have the outdoors, guns, and jeeping thing in common. So, here we meet Steve for only the second time, yet we feel like he is family to us. It was so strange I must admit, but felt so right! The weekend was amazing. I didn’t mention to you, that between the time I had met Steve, and he had come to visit, my father had passed away from colon cancer, whom I was very close with. So, ironically, I feel like Steve is some kind of Angel my dad put in my life, as a fatherly figure watching over me. And I SWEAR he is my REAL LIVE ANGEL. He is the most gentle loving man, like a bear, and the KINDEST human being you will ever meet. He reminds me of my dad. When I dropped him off at the airport after our amazing three days together, I cried (he doesn’t know this- but now he does LOL) because it’s amazing to have such a wonderful human being and mentor in my life! Since then he has come to visit again, and he is coming back in March to teach at our WORKSHOP, with Sandra Bianco Photography and myself. Our flyer states, “When you meet Steve, you wont forget him,” and it’s literally true.

Q. What is the one thing you struggle with the most in terms of the technical side or the business side of your business?

Staying Organized! If there is a way to stay organized can someone please share with me, because I have tried anything and everything!!! I don’t have a problem getting organized, it’s STAYING organized for more than a week! Ahhhh! It’s the artists brain of mine!

Q. Want to share any advice you received early on in your career that helped you immensely?

The biggest advice I can give as a beginner, is don’t undercut your prices, just to raise them later. Price yourself high, and offer a “discount” when you start out. If you start low, you will lose all of your clients when you raise your prices, which you ultimately worked hard for, right? SO, if you want to make $1500 a session, still put your pricing up at $1500 a session with a big fat 50% off so that in the future, your clients know they will be paying the $1500, and they think they are getting a deal at the same time!! If you price yourself at $750, and then next time they book, you tell them your $1500 now, then they are going to go elsewhere. It’s all about the psychology. You have to tell your clients your worth, and then give them a discount.

Q. Any parting words of wisdom for other photographers just starting out?

Customer service is by far one of THE most important things in this business. This is one of the reasons I don’t take on too many clients at once….because I like to spoil my clients! I want them to know they are my number one priority and FIRST on my list. I have personal contact with them all the time. Also, because I am so UN-organized, I have an AMAZING assistant to help me with my emails, or anything else I need for that matter, but most importantly emails. I want to be sure all my emails are answered within the few hours they are received, and because I am not good with this, my assistant makes sure my customer service is being taken care of. If the email is important, it is redirected to me immediately, along with a phone call from my assistant to “Get on it now”- (Sometimes she is MY boss). You can have the most amazing photography in the world, but if you have bad business, no client will come back to work with you.

Thank you so much for sharing with us Brooke!!!

After a long holiday hiatus, we are back with our Featured Photog Friday! This week, it’s a true honor to be speaking with Shipra Panosian Photography! Shipra is a true artist who fits her own mold and not those of the industry or the other wedding photographers around her. You can feel the emotional connection between her camera and her subjects, which is a true gift because somehow she brings that out in her clients. And then I met her in person and my obsession was solidified I hope you enjoy her work and her words as much as I do!

Welcome Shipra! Tell us a bit about yourself . . .

When I’m not behind a camera you can find me at home in Orlando with my 4 children and husband who are the mainstay of my life. I have the incredible privilege of homeschooling my menagerie of kids
during the week, and living out my jump-up-and-down-in-my-pajamas-i-can’t-believe-I-get-to-do-this-passion on the weekends by being a photographer. Photography is my way of expressing and sharing what I find meaningful, beautiful, honest, raw, and powerful with the world.

quirky fact: If I could be a flower, I would be a ranunculus and I live in a milk glass vase.

Q. Tell us about your photography journey, when and how did you become interested, and how did that grow into starting a business?

For as long as I can remember, I was going to grow up and be a Doctor. But for just as long as I can remember, while I was saying I would be a Doctor, I spent all my free time doing something involving the creative arts. I went to college and graduated with a Pre-med degree but even then, every other class was an art class. I suppose I just assumed that my job would be practical and a ‘good choice’ while my love for making art would be what I do quietly and for myself. I took some time off after college because there was this part of me that knew that if I wanted to commit to med-school, I needed to be 100% certain it was right for me. I could never shake the feeling that I was trying to stuff my round-peg heart into a square-peg career.

It was during that time that I married my husband and his father gave me his Minolta 35mm camera. It was a new medium for me to experiment with artistically and it was a revelation! Skip down the road a few years and I was getting a lot of commissions to draw portraits for people. I began to get more serious about portrait photography so that I could use photographs as references (kind of like having a live model, but not!) The more I delved into portraiture, the more I began to develop my technical photography skills so I could create strong portraits to draw from. I also had my first son, the ideal subject, and my time with a camera grew exponentially. J One thing led to another and I began to get inquiries from friends of friends for photo sessions.

In 2008, a wedding photographer friend of mine, whom I really admire, let me tag along with him to a wedding he was shooting. He gave me a pressure free opportunity to experience and photograph the wild and wonderful world that is the Wedding Day. And that was that. I wanted in. I wanted to photograph weddings.

In 2009, I hung out my “wedding photographer – open for business” shingle and shot 1 wedding. I had no more bookings till almost a year later in 2010 (yup, that was tough.) But by the end of 2010 I’d photographed 6 weddings, and now here I am.

Q. Tell us about your gear, Nikon or Canon? Digital or Film? Favorite lens? Anything on your wish list?

I am a Canon shooter and use the 5D Mark III as my primary working camera. I also shoot film and my new favorite film camera is the Hasselblad 500cm, it shoots square frames…how cool is that! My other film cameras are the Contax 645, and a Canon EOS 3 35mm.

At the top of my wish list is getting a faster computer (this covers the first several slots of the wish list.)

Q. I am a huge fan of your work, I get lost in your blog and website for hours. All of the people you photograph are so filled with emotion and seem so relaxed and natural in front of the camera. How do you do it? How do you connect on an emotional level, get them to relax and be themselves?

First off, thank you Rebecca. That’s a lovely compliment and one that I really take to heart because being able to convey honest emotion in my photography is one of the single most important elements I strive for in my work. At the core, I am quite a serious person. I have a difficult time with surface talk and find it easier to go deep with people sooner rather than later. When I photograph people, the first twenty minutes is often spent taking time to talk and finding something to connect over. In order for me to expect people to let me into their lives, I have to be willing to let them into mine. So I ask a lot of questions about who they are and respond with sharing about who I am in more than just a surface way.

I tend to be shy but I invariably open up to and relax around people who genuinely want to know me so I figure that if that works so well for me, it will work with my clients. When I show up to a session, I am focused on building a sincere friendship more than getting the ‘perfect shot.’ Once I build that small level of trust and friendship with them, the photography part of it becomes quite easy because at that point, most people have forgotten that I have a camera with me.

Q. Why weddings?

Because at a wedding, I get to experience the full range of human emotion and connection. Getting married is one of the most important milestones in a person’s life and I get to be right in the middle of it with a front row ticket! I can’t imagine anything more fulfilling for a people-watcher like myself to photograph than weddings.

Q. What’s your favorite part of a wedding to photograph?

Hmmm, I’ve thought long and hard about this before because I’ve been asked this question previously. But I can’t answer with anything specific. I feel like I’m being redundant, but anything that expresses emotion draws me. So whether it’s when the bride is laughing with her bridesmaids in the dressing room, or looking into her groom’s eyes during the ceremony, or hugging her parents goodbye before she drives off, if a moment carries feeling, I love to photograph it.

Q. I know you travel a lot to photograph weddings – how did your business go in that direction? How do your destination brides find you?

I didn’t really make a concentrated effort to go looking for destination weddings so I don’t have any step-by-step guidelines. All of my destination weddings have been booked because of referrals from friends or because the bride and/or groom were guests at a wedding I had photographed.

Q. What is the one thing you struggle with the most in terms of the technical side or the business side of your business?

The things I’ve struggled most with are to do with the business of being a business. I significantly underestimated the amount of non-photography work that goes into running a business and because of my lack of admin skills, I feel like I don’t have as solid a business as I would like. I think that I always assumed that if I just focus on making amazing images, the “clients would come” and the business would figure itself out, but I’ve learned that it’s just not true. To that end, I’m trying to bring in people who have the skills and resources to help me with some of the business end of things (accountant, contract help, marketing help, studio manager) which leaves me more time and energy to focus on my clients and photography .

Q. Want to share any advice you received early on in your career that helped you immensely?

Some of the best and most liberating advice I heard when I was just starting out and worried that I wouldn’t book any weddings ever was…Don’t base your sense of beauty on another person’s aesthetic. I read that somewhere and though I don’t have it quoted exactly, the sentiment behind it really stuck with me. To photograph for myself, to create something I find beautiful and am proud of and to not have to explain it. For me, I really took a hold of that and made it my own. It’s so easy to see my work through another person’s eyes and be swayed by opinions about what someone else thinks is beautiful and what isn’t, but that little phrase has always reminded me to find my own aesthetic and be true to it regardless of how many clients may or may not book me because of it.

Q. Any parting words of wisdom for other photographers just starting out?

Enjoy the process. Don’t forget to enjoy the process. Instead of spending time fretting about what you haven’t yet achieved and worrying about if you ever will, take the time to savor and enjoy where you are right now in your photography journey. Trust that if you’re not there right now, you’ll get there eventually so just slow down and enjoy the here and now. (These are words of wisdom I have to remind myself of quite often and I think they’ll apply to me even when I’m a photographer with hundreds of weddings under my belt!)

Thank you, Shipra!! It’s been a pleasure having you here

Now, GO! Like her Facebook page and follow her work!! You won’t regret it!

Welcome, Mariana and Khaled! Tell us a bit about yourselves.

We are a husband and wife international photography duo based in Tampa, Florida with a passion for travel, weddings and each other. Starting the business in December 2009, my (Mariana) bold nature, balanced with dedication and goal setting, has fueled the growth of Kismis Ink Photography.

Although Khaled manages his own separate career, he’s my secret weapon and rock. Kismis Ink wouldn’t exist without him. Our business rapidly grew during its first year due to effective social media interaction, building genuine relationships and determination, which flowed well with our fluid creativity and energetic passion.

When we’re not shooting weddings, you can find us spending time with our two kids, catching up on Dexter or Breaking Bad, developing innovative ways to shape our business and planning creative shoots.

Q. Tell us about your photography journey, when and how did you become interested, and how did that grow into starting a business?

When Khaled graduated with his master’s degree in 2008, I bought him a Nikon DSLR as a graduation gift. He had wanted one for so long and was ecstatic. unfortunately, with his new career, he hardly had time to pick it up-so I did- and it was love at first sight. I quickly discovered it was a way for me to connect with people, which is one of my biggest passions. It was a medium to bring happiness to others, share my creativity and learn about other cultures and personalities. I started planning creative shoots and soon the word spread. I realized I could fuse my passion with my entrepreneurial spirit and create a business that would not only bring income, but also sustain my passion to travel and share my gifts with the world. I started connecting online, soaking in business education, learning more about the industry and meeting other photographers. Khaled was so supportive and excited for this new journey. Our very first wedding was recommended by a fellow photographer. We’ve been honored to have the trust and support from other photographers, including recommendations and documenting their big days!

Q. How is it working with your spouse? What is the main challenge and what is the main benefit, or your favorite thing about working with your spouse?

Mariana: I LOVE working with my husband. We have a connection that I know could never be the same with another assistant or second shooter. We understand and connect with our couples in many ways, especially because we’re in love. We know our weaknesses and our strengths, and support each other to continue successfully growing.

Khaled: It’s wonderful! Mariana makes me realize things about myself I have yet to discover. She also encourages and teaches me that nothing is impossible. she makes everything fun! Because of my separate career, I enjoy working with her and spending time together.

Q. What is your specialty contribution to the team? Meaning, Mariana, what do you do best and Khaled, what do you do best?

I am a huge people-person. I’m touchy-feely, loud, fun, and bold where Khaled is more technical, quiet and analytical. We balance each other and I believe together we make the perfect mix that couples need to document on their special day.

Q. What gear is in your camera bag? What’s your favorite lens to use while photographing a wedding?

We shoot with Nikon gear. Khaled’s favorite lens is the 70-200 and mine (currently) is the 35.

Q. How do you push yourself creatively as well as from an education standpoint? What challenges you to keep growing and learning?

Mariana: I’m never satisfied. There is always room for improvement and new challenges to master. I love to dance to the beat of my own music, which generates lots of ideas and inspirations for our business. I challenge myself to apply the knowledge and information I learn from workshops I’ve attended and amazing people from our industry that inspire me daily. Traveling and meeting new people helps me to push my limits while teaching and helping fellow photographers keeps the creativity flowing. I learn even more when I teach.

Khaled: I try to keep myself inspired by other resources outside the wedding industry. I’m always encouraged by Mariana’s “Hands-on experience” principle.

Q. Do you have a favorite image that you’ve taken? Show us!

Mariana: I not-so-secretly love capturing the bride’s emotions and feelings moments before walking down the aisle. If I have to pick one it would be this one (Cindy moments before the ceremony in the limo)

Q. What is the one thing you struggle with the most in terms of the technical side or the business side?

Mariana: I struggle with delegating work/task. I love to get things done myself and I tend to believe I can do it all, however, I’ve learned that outsourcing what you are not your best at is the best thing you can do for your business. That way you can focus on your strengths and what you truly love doing.

Q. What’s something you wish you knew early on in your photography journey that you know now?

Mariana: I’m in love with the art of photography and people. However, the business side is just as important, if not more so, but it’s also the most challenging. I wish I would have anticipated some of these challenges from the start.

Q. Any parting words of wisdom for other photographers just starting out?

Having a clear vision for your business goals is vital and is a shorter path to success. Once that vision is strongly established, you’ll find more pleasure working with people and you’ll enjoy doing what you do best.

Q. Welcome, Alecia! Tell us a bit about yourself!

Hi, I’m Alecia and I’m going to now tell you a bunch of very random things about myself. I love all things purple. I would die without coffee. I love to dance in my kitchen with my kids. I sing really loud in the car. I hate road trips. I love, love, love shopping. I don’t cook very often. Cleaning toilets is my absolute least favorite thing to do EVER. As a young teenage, I was fully convinced I was going to marry John Stamos. I am NOT a morning person. I’ve been loyal to Canon from day one, but sometimes I secretly wish I would have started out with Nikon. I have insomnia. My favorite thing to do is laugh really hard. I invented sarcasm. I’m extremely loyal to my friends. I talk A LOT. I played with Barbies until I was 12. I am wholeheartedly in love with Tim Riggins from NBC’s Friday Night Lights (which if you haven’t watched that show, you NEED to. It is by far one of the best series on TV ever!). I love to read. Psychology of any kind was my favorite subject in college. I really want to go to Australia but I won’t because I don’t want to sit on an airplane that long. And, finally, I was 19 the very first time I laid eyes on my husband and the sight of him left me LITERALLY speechless. Which was quite inconvenient because he was a customer at the espresso stand I worked at, and really the only words I needed to say were “What can I get for ya?” – but no sound would come out of my mouth. Which NEVER happens! Yeah, so that was cool.

Q. Tell us about your photography journey, when and how did you become interested, and how did that grow into starting a business?

Well, first and foremost, I’ve always had an intense love of photography. There is just something unspeakable about looking at an image that just makes you FEEL something. It’s simply amazing, even still. It never ceases to amaze me how a photograph has the ability evoke such a variety of emotions. From pure joy to tremendous sorrow. There is no other art form that strikes me quite the same way. My journey into photography started with playing with a camera! I got my first DSLR and I went nuts! I was taking pictures of everything! I was constantly online learning, learning, and learning more. I couldn’t stop! It really became an obsession, so much that my husband used to get irritated with just how MUCH time I spent researching it.

Over time, I learned that my favorite subject to photograph was children. I have always loved babies and kids. Interacting with them and “getting the shot” was became more and more rewarding. Over time, I needed more kids to photograph (my kids were DONE!) so I started taking pictures of other peoples kids. That, much like many other photographers journey, lead me to the decision to start a business. Why not do something that I love and make a little extra income? I spend the first two years trying out all different types of portrait photography before I really decided to set my focus mainly on newborns. Those tiny miracles just amaze me. I love the entire process of a newborn session. Not only do I get to snuggle and love on a brand new baby (which also gives me my baby fix, and keeps me from having any more children) – I LOVE getting the shot. It takes patience and attention to detail, but once I’ve got it – I can’t stop grinning!

Q. How did you find your style and how do you continue to come up with fresh ideas for your newborn set ups?

I never really know how to answer the “what’s your style” or “how did you find your style” question. I don’t really know the answer to either! I just know what I like and what I don’t and go from there! I know it sounds kinda lame, but that’s the honest truth! As for fresh ideas, my newborn prop shopping addiction comes in very handy for coming up with new setups! Somebody needs to start a support group, because I can’t stop on my own. Those antique shops, Etsy, Ebay, garage sales, thrift stores, craft stores, they never stop calling my name! I can’t get away from them, lol! The other side of setups is the newborn. Each baby is different and most often those tiny unique details that add to a picture come from the baby themselves! They all have a preference on how they like this or that positioned, and I’m always playing, seeing what I can do with them and if it looks good. I want the babies to look comfortable and peaceful. I don’t like to over do it with props. That takes away from the baby itself, which should be the first thing that grabs your eye! If your eye travels to the Dr. Seuss Tin Can before the baby, somethings wrong with that picture…

Q. Studio light or natural light for your newborns? How did you learn studio lights?

When I was in my old studio, I didn’t have adequate light to shoot with natural light. I used to be so frustrated, because natural light is SO much easier. What you see is what you get! Over time, I learned how to make studio light look natural, but it definitely was a trial and error process! There are tutorials online, but somehow I just needed to figure it out myself. I’m looking for that little shadow under the nose (butterfly lighting). For other photographers out there wanting to use studio lights, keep in mind there is no “perfect spot” for your studio light. And I’m always moving my lights around! As much as it used to frustrate me that I couldn’t use natural light, I’m grateful for being in that situation. In my new studio, I can do either! I love that I can do a session at 3am, if I wanted to. Which I don’t. Because I’m sleeping. And anyone who wants to do a session at 3am is just stupid. I don’t know, I kind of equate it to learning how to drive with a stick shift (which I think every kid should). Maybe you don’t want to drive a stick shift for ever, but at least you have the ability to do both.

Q. Tell us about your gear. Anything on your wish list?

What’s in my bag? or studio? Too much stuff, lol! I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark III and have a large variety of lenses, and of course they are all for different purposes. For newborns, I mostly shoot with my 50mm 1.2L. When I’m shooting shots from above (baby on the floor) – I turn to my 35mm 1.4L. And that’s mostly because I’m short and too lazy to get a step stool and also I like being able to get the shot without feeling like I might fall forward off the step stool. Safety first! I also shoot with my 100mm 2.8L for all my macro shots. I do like to get a good close up shot, especially when I see something unique about a newborn.

I don’t currently have any gear on my wish list! I think that’s the first time I’ve ever been able to say that. Don’t tell my husband though there’s a good chance I will change my mind about that soon.

Q. What is the one thing you struggle with the most in terms of the technical side or the business side?

I feel pretty confident with the technical side of things. I know how to use my camera without thinking, I’m ALL about getting it right in camera first. Mostly because I absolutely detest editing! The less time I have to spend in front of the computer, the better! I’d much rather be playing with babies!!!

As for the business side of things, that’s definitely not my strongest area. I get asked that question a lot when I’m mentoring, photographers want to know what they can do to increase business. I don’t do a ton of marketing. I don’t do in person proofing, which I hear is great for sales! My clientele is either via word of mouth or google. One thing I really strive for is having exceptional customer service. I want happy clients!! I’m great at interacting with my clients – I’ve met so many fun families along the way. I’m super chatty and like to ask people about themselves. Usually by the end of a session, I get hugged by my clients on their way out my door! I know that part of business is building relationships with clients and that part comes naturally to me.

Q. Want to share any advice you received early on in your career that helped you immensely?

I know this is going to sound cliche but the best advice I got was to just keep shooting! Learn how to use that camera without thinking. Understand how it works and why you are getting the results you are. You want a different look? Figure out how to do it with your camera. You are the boss of that machine, not the other way around. You make it work for you. Find your passion, and do what you love. Just because you have a camera does not mean you have to be the photographer of everything. Don’t rely on a very limited knowledge of Photoshop Elements 4 (does that make me seem old?) because if you do, you will end up with hideous results that will embarrass you for years to come. I speak from experience. I have “an external hard drive of shame” that I will forever keep, just so that I can bust it out when my friends are around. They are in tears from laughter, I am in tears from a mix of that and utter mortification.

Q. What’s something you wish you knew early on in your photography journey that you know now?

I wish somebody would have told me just how much laundry I was going to have to do! Those precious little miracles I was speaking of early sure to like to poop and pee on my stuff! I’m kidding, I don’t really know the answer to that question either. I feel like I’ve learned some lessons along the way, but those lessons have helped shape me into who I am! I’ve also been able to experience things along this journey that I never knew I would! And I’m glad nobody told me these things are coming! I’ve flown across the country meeting and working alongside some really fun & amazing photographers. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching some of the most amazing women through mentoring! I absolutely love following their work after they leave me to see if what I taught them stuck! I worked with PhotoVision last year, and being filmed was quite an experience! I’m grinning right now just thinking about all the things I did and said whilst being filmed, because you really do forget the cameras are there! Apparently I don’t utilize that verbal filter like I should.

Q. Any parting words of wisdom for other photographers just starting out?

Don’t jump into it too soon! Give yourself time to become experienced enough to start charging people for what you do. You’ll get in over your head, possibly doing things you don’t like to do! Take the time to explore and find what you love. I think even though from the outside looking in, it seems like what we do is all the same, its not. Every person has their own story, their own love of photography . . . just do what you love, the way you love to do it. And don’t worry about the rest

Welcome Trenton! Tell us a bit about yourself!

Thanks Rebecca! I’m so delighted and honored to be on the CreatePro blog! The short version of the story is that I shoot people … with a camera, of course. The long of it is that I’m a full time graphic design student and a full time photographer, which doesn’t always lend time for too much else. When I’m not behind a monitor or lens, I’m usually off at a concert or museum, or just having good times with good people.

Q. Tell us about your photography journey, when and how did you become interested, and how did that grow into starting a business?

Ever since I can remember, my parents have jokingly called me “button-pusher.” I can recall being very young and simply having a fascination with buttons and knobs of all kinds, wondering what each one did. Being a millennial, I think that naturally evolved into having some sort of interest in computers, which led to taking a CompTia A+ class in high school. After deciding that taking apart and putting together computers wasn’t quite my thing, I still knew I wanted to do something involving computers. From there, I started learning graphic design and Photoshop. I eventually got to a point where I didn’t have enough photos for my designs, so I picked up a camera and haven’t really looked back.

Q. What’s your favorite subject to photograph?

I really love photographing people. I think that there’s something about documenting our times or telling a story through the faces of people and the places and things that surround them that really keeps me going. I don’t know if this is the right place to get all mushy and romantic over photography, but, in a sense, it’s that Cartier-Bresson kind of “decisive moment” that keeps me in love with the game.

Q. Tell us about your gear. Anything on your wish list?

Oh my … My primary setup is a Nikon D700 with a low-aperture 50 mm. I also shoot a digital medium format Mamyia usually with a 55 mm or 85 mm. The Mamyia has a Leaf Aptus 22 back, and I’d love to upgrade to a PhaseOne back sometime soon. As far as strobes are concerned, I mostly use Paul C. Buff, but it depends on the shoot and what’s available for rent.

Q. How or where do you find your creative inspiration? How do you push yourself creatively?

I get creative inspiration from all kinds of things. I love thinking about interesting designs and how they could be translated into photographs. I love music videos and films. I think that there are a lot of creatives, lighting designers, and directors of photography in the television and film world who are severely under appreciated. I love art, and to look through museums, galleries, and old photo archives to see what people are doing now, and to see what people have done throughout the past. As simple as it sounds, I look at a lot of pictures. My inspirational philosophy is pretty simple: good stuff in, good stuff out.

As far as pushing myself creatively … I’m always working on an independent or personal project of some kind. I’m a firm believer in getting your personal work to sell your professional work. If you’re making the things that you want to be making, chances are, there’s someone out there who wants to pay you for it.

Q. How did you find your style?

This is always such an interesting question to me because I think that, in a sense, my style really found me. It’s kind of a culmination of my own personal history, and to that end, I think it’s still evolving. Had I not gotten into design, or known Photoshop, or loved movies, all kinds of defining elements to my style would be missing. I think it’s almost a bit like someone’s personality in the sense that it can sometimes really be molded by past experiences, events, and interests.

Q. What is the one thing you struggle with the most in terms of the technical side or the business side?

The business side for sure, embarrassingly so some days. I can get the gist of most technical manuals, but rarely are there step by step directions for running a business.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

I hardly have any idea where I’ll be next week! Predicting 5-10 years is, quite candidly, a bit of a stretch. My highest priority is to be happy and be behind a camera, probably shooting interesting people. After that, the rest of it doesn’t really matter so much. I would like to be doing work for major magazines and companies at some point, but in most ways that’s more of a bonus than anything.

Q. Want to share any advice you received early on in your career that helped you immensely?

I was always told to be sure that I did something I loved. I think that there’s certainly something to that, especially for photographers, and even some days within the realm of photography itself. This business has a lot of ups and downs, and if you’re starting out for a glamorous lifestyle or an easy paycheck you should get your priorities in check … quickly.

Q. Any parting words of wisdom for other photographers just starting out?

I think one of the most overlooked and undervalued things photographers don’t consider is the real value of a good creative community. I’m not saying everyone should join a hippie commune, but so many times we get stuck in the bubbles of our own worlds and don’t stop to appreciate many of the great things that are around us. Invest time and effort into creating or joining a small community of artists whose opinions you value and whose work you admire; it can be a great creative think tank when you need it, and even better resources for photo shoots.

Thank you for chatting with us, Trenton!!

Q. Welcome! Tell us a bit about yourself!

Hi there! My name is Kristen and I’m a photographer! I just celebrated my 3 year business anniversary and although I’m based in Central Florida, I actually have become more of a destination photographer, and have had the opportunity to travel to places like Australia, the Bahamas, Mexico, Canada and Jamaica for weddings! I’m obsessed with all things fashion (my photography background actually stems from doing “fashion” photography as a hobby and working with developing models). I also love sweet tea, cheese and cats.

Q. Tell us about your photography journey, when and how did you become interested, and how did that grow into starting a business?

Oh wow, ok well I always had been that girl with her camera through high school and college. Then, my mom bought me a Canon Rebel film camera my junior year of college. Don’t get it twisted though, I’m now strictly a Nikon girl

We had a big graphic design project during my senior year to make a magazine cover as part of a typography assignment. When I looked for a cover photo from what we were given online, I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. So I invited my friend to take some headshots so I could use them. After those pictures were developed, I started getting contacted by all of my sorority sisters to take pictures of them with their friends, boyfriends and parents. I spent nearly 8 hours a day out at this garden shooting. My payment was a set of the doubles from WalMart (yes, seriously).

Fast forward when I decided to get some experience working for a wedding photographer. Thinking it would be super fun – I was super wrong. It was exhausting, stressful and scary. I vowed to never photograph another wedding for as long as I lived when I left that job.

So I turned to shooting more as a hobby and working with developing models. That was more my speed! But then, the same friend that I shot in high school asked me to shoot her wedding. She was also a model and Miss Florida runner up – so it was an easy assignment. At her wedding – something clicked that had never clicked before! I was able to take everything I loved about photography and everything I loved about my friends and had this epiphany. I loved every second of that day – stress, responsibility and all! From there it just went from word of mouth referrals and I’d shoot about 3 weddings a year.

When I got laid off from my job as a marketing director in 2009, I decided to make the jump full-time, and I haven’t looked back. My business has grown nearly 1500% from my first to second year, and it’s been on a steady incline ever since.

Q. What’s your favorite subject to photograph?

I still absolutely love photographing weddings, but I adore shooting developing models! It’s sort of where I felt the most at home in the past, but now it’s the opportunity to be a little more creative and express myself emotionally through my subjects.

When it comes to weddings, I love the opportunity to travel and shoot in new locations. It’s so inspiring to see different cultures and venues and just absorb myself in an entirely different world.

Q. Tell us about your gear. Anything on your wish list?

I’m all primes – so I keep my lenses pretty simple and have what I need for right now. But I wouldn’t mind picking up film again and getting back in to the creative groove that I miss so much from my past.

Q. How or where do you find your creative inspiration? How do you push yourself creatively?

This is a place that I’ve been struggling with so much lately! I LOVE my brides, but I’m definitely going to be taking far less weddings in the future. Just having a weekend off gives me the opportunity to breathe and relax, which in turn – makes me feel more creative and excited for the next wedding.

I get inspired from so many places! In my work with models, I’m inspired from fashion magazines (mainly international editions) and the culture and fashion from other parts of the world. Currently, I’ve been digging the romantic boho casual side of Australian fashion.

When I’m working with a bride and groom – they’re my biggest inspiration! Every relationship is different, and it’s my job to study each one and learn what their relationship is about. They inspire me in the way that they touch, love and kiss.

Q. What is the one thing you struggle with the most in terms of the technical side or the business side?

Ugh. Financials – for sure. I didn’t become a photographer because I’m great with money. We just hired a new CPA, Financial Advisor and legal team to help us get completely in order, but I’m not sure who’s more stressed out – me or them! I learned that I have to be honest with myself and it’s just not a place that I’m skilled, so I needed to bring in people who are experts in that field. I have a hard time thinking that I can do it all. It’s always hard to admit when you need help!

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

I would absolutely love to go in to consulting for other photography studios. I think my business has grown so quickly because of my marketing knowledge. When it comes to marketing, branding and that side of the business, I can make anyone successful! I love market research and I’d love to start working with other photographers to guide them. Maybe even be a bit of an “agent” for other photographers. I love developing talented professionals!

Q. Want to share any advice you received early on in your career that helped you immensely?

I realized early on that you need to LOVE what you do. It’s never been about the money, or the traveling, or anything else. It’s about your heart. If you don’t love it – and I mean REALLY love it – your clients will know.

Also, you need a fantastic team to support you. Whether it’s your husband/wife, parents, or an assistant – trust those that work with you and delegate some of that responsibility.

Q. What’s something you knew early on in your photography journey that you know now?

I wish I had known to just let myself breathe sometimes. I am such a workaholic, and you just need to give yourself time to yourself so that you don’t burn out.

Q. Any parting words of wisdom for other photographers just starting out?

Have confidence in yourself! You have to trust that you’re making the right decisions for you and your business. I can’t tell you how many tears were shed when I started – and I had to trust myself that I was making the right choices. I had to stick to my guns with my pricing, and my business principles to not discount. It was really hard to hear the “no’s”, but in the end, it was so very worth it! My clients respect me and value my work – and that’s priceless to me!

Q. Welcome, Joie! Tell us a bit about yourself!
A. Hi there, I’m Joie! A wife to my high school sweetheart now for 18 years. Together we have four children. Two girls and two boys. At the moment our oldest is learning to drive while our youngest is potty training. Crazy, but I wouldn’t trade a single moment!

Q. Tell us about your photography journey, when and how did you become interested, and how did that grow into starting a business?
A. I’ve always been an artsy person. Every chance I had in high school to choose an elective I would always choose art. It wasn’t until I had my first child that I really started playing around with photography. I remember dressing my daughter up in every outfit she owned and snapping a quick picture of her the day after we came home from the hospital. In 2005 I got my first dslr. Which at the time was the Canon Rebel. Then moved up to the Nikon D300 in 2007. This is when my passion really began. I started shooting anything and everything, friends and families children. Then I started getting request to shoot other peoples children. It wasn’t until 2010 that I officially stated my business as Angels Among Us. I just recently changed the name this spring to Asher Layne. Why you ask! Well, I felt like I had out grown the Angels Among Us name and wanted something a little more upscale. The name Asher Layne is made up of two boys names I loved that my husband and I couldn’t agree upon while naming our boys. Crazy, right? haha… This way I still got to use my names I loved and it just so happened that they sounded awesome together. Oh, and in case you’re wondering… Our boys names are Tyeler Seth (Tye) and Ryder Joseph.

Q. What’s your favorite subject to photograph?
A. Definitely children then newborns. Toddlers hold a special place in my heart. I love to capture them as they discover new things. They’re always so wide eyed and full of personality. I don’t even mind the cranky and meltdown moments. They’re just so sweet… I could play with them all day.

Q. Tell us about your gear. Anything on your wish list?
A. I shoot mainly with the Nikon D700 and use the D300 for backup. My go to lens was the 50mm 1.4G until I started having focusing issues. So, now I’ve been rocking my 85mm 1.8G. I also have the 105mm 2.8 for macro shots. Oh gosh my wish list… Lets see. At the top of my list would be the Nikkor 35mm 1.4G.

Q. How or where do you find your creative inspiration? How do you push yourself creatively?
A. Gosh, my inspiration is found everywhere! Pinterest is AWESOME!!! I’ll usually get a little information from my clients about their child and put things together from that. My main goal is to capture children as themselves. I mainly let them run the show.

Q. What is the one thing you struggle with the most in terms of the technical side or the business side?
A. I would say, keeping up with my expenses and finances. I procrastinate and wait until the end of the year to get everything together to take to the accountant. Yes, I’m a slacker!

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
A. I see myself with a small, quaint, natural light studio set up to do newborn work. Nothing big. Just small and cozy with a ton of natural light.

Q. Any parting words of wisdom for other photographers just starting out?
A. The best words of wisdom I could give to photographers just starting out would be; to stay true to yourself and not to worry about what other photographers are doing around you. You will only drive yourself CRAZY!

Q. Welcome, Lexia! Tell us a bit about yourself!

A. hello all! I’m a fine art wedding film photographer, but i also shoot lifestyle portraits and birth photography. but mostly i’m a mama to two little boys (tavish 4yrs, Pierson 2 yrs) and we’re right in the middle of a cross country move to Portland, Oregon from Tampa, Florida, with a small layover (well…ahem… 4 months…) in Madison, Wisconsin. If it sounds nuts, it totally is. But, we’re excited to start a new adventure in a new area!

Q. Tell us about your photography journey, when and how did you become interested, and how did that grow into starting a business?

A. Well, if you start at the VERY beginning- I always knew I would be an artist. I have in my 6 year old diary that I was going to be an artist in the section that says “what do you want to be when you grow up?”. It was never really a question or a thought about what I was going to major in- it was always the arts. but, when i entered the fine art program at the University of Wisconsin I thought I was going to be a graphic designer. After a few uninspiring professors, however, I found more of a passion in fine art photography. It was all 100% film based, with an emphasis in darkroom development, and it gave me a wonderful base to form my current style. I loved the fine art world- but when push came to shove I JUST couldnt find work after graduating. I had naively thought that with a good degree and a positive attitude and hard work ethic I would be the perfect person to hire. Unfortunately, no one was hiring, as it was the very beginning of the economic downturn. To add to the mix, we were newly pregnant, and I was beginning to sort of freak out. I knew I wanted to stay at home with my kids, and was having a hard time figuring out how to financially do so. When a few friends began asking me to shoot their weddings, I obliged. i did it the COMPLETELY wrong way- a way that I school people now NOT to do now. I showed up without any experience whatsoever, no backup equipment and I didnt even have a flash. The worst part is, I didnt even know there was anything wrong with that. I had never shot under another wedding photographer, and had no idea anything about wedding or even portrait photography. Fortunately for me, nothing bad happened, but the Photographer I am now would have an absolute conniption if I saw someone walk into a wedding that unprepared. After the third friend asked me to shoot their wedding, I thought I might as well actually start educating myself in this area of photography, and I began to think that this may be a viable option for a career. I also happened to love doing it- so it was a totally natural progression. I went to every workshop I could think of, WPPI (which was a huge eye-opener for me), and joined many online forums for wedding and portrait photography. I pushed myself to do better and better work, and my husband was a huge support system through all of this. The first time I was published i felt like I was on cloud 9 (martha stewart) and now I’m teaching one to one mentoring sessions and Rangefinder just wrote a big article on us about birth photography which I feel lucky enough to be at the forefront of.

Q. Tell us about your gear. Anything on your wish list?

A. oh man, it never ends really. Every year I tell my husband “after this, I’ll be set. promise” but every year the list just keeps going and going. I currently shoot Contax 645 medium format film camera with an 80mm zeiss planar. I use this for all portrait sessions, and the majority of weddings (about 70% of the shots are with the contax). When I shoot digital it’s with nikon- a D3s to be precise. I mainly use the 70-200mm lens, and a 80mm tilt shift, and a 50mm f1.4. I use my digital for some creative shots (like the tilt shift) and for back-up on weddings. I’m HYPER OCD about wedding photos being backed up, and though I’d absolutely love to be exclusively film, I love that the entire wedding day is immediately on three places at any given time- two memory cards in my dig, and on film from the contax. It’s only then that I can really breathe. I may switch to entirely film someday for weddings if I can hire an exclusive digital second shooter that I trust with my life- possibly in the next two years. It is hard to juggle both film and digital, as the two mediums need to be shot in very different ways, so my brain feels like mush by the end of the day, but the security makes it worth it. And things on my wish list? yes, lots. I need some new underwater equipment and i’d love to get a d800 for underwater shooting, and I also need a wide angle tilt shift for the contax (which will help eliminate a lot of the digital) and of course I keep pining after a hasselblad. I have some great polaroid cameras but i’d love to get the 600SE….. and missing my darkroom right now while we’re in transition to portland.

Q. How or where do you find your creative inspiration? How do you push yourself creatively?

A. I will tell you that I dont follow wedding blogs. I stopped that about a year ago and all of a sudden my work took a huge jump forward. I felt so much pressure to do what was supposed to get published- I kept seeing these shots over and over and thinking that they were ‘must haves’ and if I didnt have those shots I wouldnt get published. Sometimes i think we, as photographers, can be clouded by the whole ‘publishing’ thing, and getting on certain blogs, that we forget what is REALLY important to photograph. was i photographing for my clients? or for me? or for other brides to gain inspiration from this wedding? where did my priorities lie? I stressed- it became like a client ‘shot list’ to me. So, I stopped following wedding blogs, and Ipolitely unsubscribed to a lot of wedding photographers on facebook so their photos wouldnt show up in my newsfeed, and began following fine art photographers again, vintage old hollywood photographs, watching art movies and finding visual inspiration, and (as strange as it may sound) interior design journals. it’s amazing how much interior design influences weddings. I think to be at the forefront of your specific genre (whether that is weddings or portraits or whatever) you need to not only know your past but also the current trends in other creative fields. For instance, I am DYING to do a shoot inspired my the film “The Piano”, and i think the Canon Project imagin8ion was a great example of one creative field (in this case, photography) influencing another (hollywood movie production).

Q. What’s your favorite subject to photograph?

A. Thats not fair! oh i dont know. you see… I have heard from many people that in order to be really wonderfully successful you need to specialize. And while I think that is likely true, for me I would burn out in a second. I love each of the genres that I photograph- weddings for the fast pace and the pressure and the diversity (it’s portraits, event, still life, low light, candid, photojournalism, all rolled into one), boudoir for the quiet ease and beauty, family photojournalism for the ‘realness’ of it and beauty in the disheveled, and birth for the utter rawness and emotional high that I get from every single one I shoot. Without all those little pieces I think I would get tired of it all. I cant imagine doing weddings exclusively. or just portraits. I also feel like they all help each other- when I shoot births I am almost always in low-lit conditions and I never use a flash. I make myself get around it, and i use those same techniques and abilities in weddings. it’s even transferred to boudoir. I guess I look at them like languages- I’d rather be able to get around the world with a pretty darn good handle on the language than be fluent in just one. It’s way more fun to travel.

Q. Any genres that you want to explore (i.e. fashion?) in the future? Or are you happy photographing what you currently photograph?

A. for some reason, I have never had any desire to do fashion. I have no idea why. and also no desire to do commercial photography either. I think I’m so used to running the show that if an art director ever coached me on exactly what they wanted I would probably tear my hair out! but, photojournalism has always had my heart, and someday, once my children are fully grown, that is probably the avenue I will go down. Regardless, I can’t imagine ever NOT being a photographer- it will be my lifelong career as far as I can see.

Q. Do you have any routines or traditions that you go through before shooting a wedding? I.e. how do you get pumped up before a wedding?

A. I wish I had an awesome answer for this! I wish I had like a warm up dance with a certain song I listened to on my iPod. but i’ve just now realized i’m totally lame… ready for this? i just love to feel prepared. i love to double and triple check my equipment and charge batteries. does that sound nerdy? i really do though. i love having a full bag of enloop batteries all fresh and ready to go (yeah… i have the rainbow sparkly kind… i know you’re jelly…). but i never go into it having any pre-conceived ideas of creative shots i want to get. i actually try NOT to think about it. i want whatever happens to come naturally at that time depending on my client’s moods and light, and location. if they are laughing gut-busters i’m not going to slow them down to get a very intimate serious portrait. Likewise the opposite. If i have preconceived ideas on the ‘shots’ i want to get i end up ruining the true style of the day.

Q. What is the one thing you struggle with the most in terms of the technical side or the business side?

A. well, I think I’m still developing technically, especially in film- and I think any photographer who says he/she is not is either fooling themselves or shouldn’t be in the business. There is always more to learn. The thing I struggle with the most is finding a balance between work and life. It’s especially apparent right now in this transition because I’m working from home in a second floor tiny apartment with two wild boys and two big dogs and a husband who just started a new job. My office is located currently on my dresser, which is actually out in the living room, which is also the dining room. I actually just had to get up from writing that sentence to clean up a wayward turd that was just pooped on the carpet- we’re in the middle of potty training my two year-old. That is the kind of chaos that is the reality of my business. It is difficult because I never know whether to say I’m a stay at home mom or a working professional. I’m both, which means sometimes I can not give my fullest to either item. I think those women who stay at home with their children and are mommy by day and business owner by night tend to burn the candle at both ends, and put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be everything to every one. We stay up until all hours of the night editing and getting work back to clients, marketing, blogging and getting the word out on social media, answering emails, sending over contracts and questionnaires, and the never ending list of random business to-dos. What keeps me going is the fact that 1) i know this is a very temporary situation, and in a few weeks we’ll be in portland in a more suitable location for not only my family but also my business, 2) that i get to be there for my kids’ nap times, if they fall down and need a hug from their mama, etc. i’m always accessible which is a blessing and a curse at the same time. but also, I know that I am being an awesome example for my kids. My oldest son says he wants to be a ‘tographer and is excited to hear about anything i’m doing.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

A. well, hopefully we’ll be a little more settled than we are now. but I’d love to finally have my own space to meet clients and do some personal work!

Q. Any parting words of wisdom for other photographers just starting out?

A. educate yourself. over.and over.and over.and over. I’m not saying you need to go to a four year university or fine art school. but i am saying that you cant just pick up a camera and call yourself a photographer and expect it all to go rosy. attend workshops, go to conferences, and don’t just do work for ‘clients’. do work for yourself. If you suck at a certain part of shooting a wedding (say, the lowly lit reception) get out there and shoot a bunch for someone else and LEARN. know when you suck- dont let fluffy facebook comments cloud your reality. Have people who you admire critique your work, and expect harsh criticisms. If it’s your first or second year in the industry and people are saying “omg! thats so pretty! i LOVE that picture!” that doesn’t count- it’s probably not the truth. your work probably sucks. mind did too. mine probably still does. you should have a regular critique like you get a regular dental exam. you’re fooling yourself if your facebook comments are all cotton candy and bubblegum- those don’t count as an accurate description of your ability as a professional photographer. You also need to question everything- ‘why’ are you doing this the way you are? what is the reasoning behind posing that baby the way you are? what is the reasoning behind doing those ‘creative’ and trendy shots at a wedding? If you answered ‘because I think it’s super cute’ that is probably the wrong answer. dig deeper. ’why’ are you editing your photos the way you do? Is it for immediate fun and trend to get clients to walk in the door? or for long-lasting and timeless beauty? Who is your target audience, and is that something you feel passionate about? WHY does this make you happy (and it doesn’t count if your answer is ‘because babies are so cute!” or “because i just LOVE weddings!” you can visit babies and attend weddings any time you want…. being happy in your profession has to do with YOU and not your client’s happiness). These are things I wish I would have thought about my first four years in the industry. It’s really only now that I’m beginning to question the industry’s trends, and making changes in my own work as far as style, medium, and format. It’s scary to go against the tides, but it’s also so liberating and exciting. Part of me wants to say right here “don’t be afraid to be you, and do your style’ but I think for a lot of photographers out there you may not even KNOW your own style for the first 5 years. Maybe you’re truly just soaking everything up around you and you are sort of emulating the photographers you admire, and out of that you find your way. I’m not saying thats a bad thing- I think thats an awesome thing. there is no better teaching tool than taking a photograph you love and dissecting it and figuring out how they did that and applying it to your own work. But make sure that you don’t get lost in it forever. Make sure you start questioning and being critical of your work. Being totally real here- I think I’ve probably got at least about another 5 or so years before I find my own ‘style’ that isn’t borrowed from someone else. I think I would have to try everything first before I can really get into it. Thats longer than some doctors go to school. but, artwork isn’t a quick thing- it isn’t a craft, it’s an artform. Either you jump in with both feet or you’ll be standing on the shore watching everyone else swim.

Q. Welcome, Tami! Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hello there! First thank you very much for featuring me, I am so honored. Let’s see… I live in Denver, Colorado my husband and 7 year old son. We moved here from California about 6 years ago and just fell in love with this beautiful state. We love visiting the mountains to go hiking and recently went on a camping trip! Camping was fun but my favorite vacation spot is still Maui. (Go figure!) I opened my photography business about three years ago and work mainly with newborns and families.

Q. Tell us about your photography journey, when did you become interested, and how did that grow into starting a business?

I officially started my business in 2009 after tormenting my son for over five years with the endless camera in his face. He is my little muse and I have him to thank for making photography not just a hobby but my passion. After he was born the time was flying by so I used my camera to document those everyday moments and am now very thankful to have all those photographs that captured him during those precious years. After being asked by close friends to take pictures of their family, I found I not only loved to photograph my little guy but others as well. It allowed my creativity to grow and I was hooked! Giving families the gift of photography has brought more joy to my life than I could have ever imagined.

Earlier this year I expanded my business and built a home studio for my newborn and baby plan clients. As many people know, newborn photography is multi faceted and many props can be involved so having a dedicated space with optimal lighting for my clients is wonderful and has really helped my business grow.

Q. What do you specialize in? And what’s your favorite subject to photograph?

My main focus is newborns, babies and families. I’d like to say newborns are my favorite subject to shoot but then I have a fantastic family session and I know there is no way I could ever give those sessions and only focus on newborns. However, I will say I specialize in newborns because I have put a tremendous amount of time and effort into learning as much as possible about photographing those little ones including taking a workshop that was one of the best investments I have made in my business.

Q. Natural light or studio light? Favorite time of day to shoot?

I actually work with both natural and studio lights in my studio. The way my space is set up I have an area full of floor to ceiling windows and a larger shooting area that is perfect for studio lights. I know it’s a bit different but it really works for me! My outdoor sessions typically take place first thing in the morning or an hour to an hour and a half before sunset. My favorite time to shoot outdoors is actually in the morning about 8:00 a.m., depending on the time of year. I know most photographers say the afternoon is their favorite but I find the clean morning sunshine very beautiful.

Q. Tell us about your gear. Anything on your wish list?

I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark iii and the 50 1.2L is my most used lens. I love the 100 2.8L for newborn macro shots. I occasionally shoot with the 85 1.8 and when I do I always wonder why I don’t shoot with it more often! If I had one lens on my wish list I think it would be the 135 1.2L. Every time I see an image taken with that lens it’s gorgeous!

Q. What or who is your biggest creative inspiration?

My biggest creative inspiration are my clients ! Before every session I like to chat with my clients on the phone or over email if they prefer and really understand exactly what they are looking for in their session. This allows me to customize each of my sessions and connect with them before the session date. This way no two sessions are the same and I challenge myself to do something different with each every session. So it keeps my photography fresh and frankly me interested. I get bored pretty easily so changing it up and challenging myself is my cure!

Q. Do you have any favorite prop vendors?

Oh, I love Pooks and Lulu. Her creations are not only beautiful but made so well and fit my little newborns perfectly.

Q. Do you have any favorite photographers that you follow?

Oh my goodness there are so many! I love Leah Cook for her lifestyle shots and one day wish I could see life the way she does with her camera. For newborns, I think Baby as Art is amazing and I also love the simplistic style of Kristen Cook. Her photography is breathtaking. Another favorite is Lisa Lucky. Check out her site and you’ll understand why! I could go on and on but I’ll stop there.

Q. What is the one thing you struggle with the most in terms of the technical side or the business side?

I would say the one thing I struggle with is book keeping. I have a great system in place but finding the time to stick to it and keep it up to date is my downfall. Especially during the busy fall season we are in!

Q. What’s one thing you wish you knew when you were first starting out in business that you know now?

I wish I knew that running a photography business was 90% business and 10% taking images. I think many people go into business because they love photography and rightfully so! However, you quickly find out if you were meant to be a business owner because you wear many hats other hats other than just taking beautiful pictures.

Q. Any parting words of wisdom for other photographers just starting out?

I think the best advice to those starting out is to enjoy the journey and don’t pressure yourself to jump into business too quickly. It’s okay to take your time and go for it when you feel consistently confident in your work.
